THE FOURTH by Gary R. Hess

The Fourth is a time
when families gather
and show their joy
for this nation of ours.

We barbecue,
We drink,
We watch baseball,
and sometimes
we blow up toys.
But at night the spectacular
display of all that we
have come to enjoy
and associate
with this great day
of ours from childhood
to adulthood
and from our parents
to our children
comes on display.
We sit and gaze
upon the bursting stars
and the midnight missiles
for our inner-child
and for our mini-mes
to have them grow
and once again pass down
this tradition of ours
and our love of country.
But as we sit and watch
these angels fly
we mustn’t lose our path
to life nor death
for all our hopes and dreams
have come from this nation.
