Love Poetry: “Stalemate” by Gary R. Hess

“Stalemate” is a love poem written by Gary R. Hess about two people who love each other deeply, but they are both too afraid to make the first move due to being too scared of rejection. They continue to flirt and dance around the subject for days, weeks, and eventually, months before either of them make the first move. The poem is written in free verse and is unrhymed.

This contemporary poem has been published in Gary R. Hess’s poetry book titled Temptation’s Trust, which is the author’s first book on love.

STALEMATE by Gary R. Hess

Her star-lit eyes gazed
upon my Earthly flesh.
A moment elapsed.
Her eyes escaped me.
Downward they moved,
and upon her breath
she awoke a sound of pleasure.

Onward we danced
this game of passion
for days, weeks, months.
Stalemate.
Will our desires overcome us,
or will we pirouette
until the moon no longer shines
and the sun no longer radiates
its massive shard of hope?
Stalemate.
