ODE TO BASEBALL
by Gary R. Hess

An angel’s voice is heard across the lan’
to lure a pitch and show tradition’s hand
Once Echo shouts the glorious Begin,
“Strike one!” The curve is cast and caught’n demand
“Foul ball!” A fastball hit a bit too early.
“You’re out!” The batter quickly swung and missed.
The home town’s hitters leave the field abruptly
Still aughts across the board; eight innings passed
A bloop! A walk. Two singles start a rally.
“Hit batter” Teammates storm the field
The batter sacs a fly into the alley
The rally’s over; double play. They yield.
The home teams up. “Homerun!” A quick one run.
“Strike out!” A walk. A double play. Two-one.
