4th of July Poetry: “Freedom” by Gary R. Hess

“Freedom” is a poem by Gary R. Hess which was written for 4th of July, 2016 but can be enjoyed any year. Happy Independence Day, USA!

Our world is often thrown apart by hatred. Hatred for our neighbors. Hatred for our government. How can we make America a better place if we take everything this country is known for granted? It is a shame. When was the last time you thought about your own freedom? Possibly recently. However, when was the last time you thought about your neighbor’s freedom? The next time he or she does something you dislike, keep that in mind.

Gender identity, political ideals, religious beliefs (or lack thereof) are part of what makes America great. Go out and celebrate this holiday as you keep in mind what truly makes America a wonderful place to live.

FREEDOM by Gary R. Hess

This day but comes once a year
and at this time we sit and cheer
for the one thing we all take for granted:
our freedom.

And with this freedom, we have misplaced
and took it to a form defaced
to do more harm than good
to those who seek brotherhood.

We sit and commit a form of tyranny
against our neighbors and their families
whenever we call them out
for all the things they do shout.
But we cannot abide by this notion
for our nation cannot exist
when hatred comes even with small pockets.
