“Divide Us, Unite Us” by Gary R. Hess – A Slam Poem

“Divide Us, Unite Us”
by Gary R. Hess

They want to divide us.
They want us to see color,
to see religion, to see ethnicity, and see gender,
to anger us and separate us
so we don’t see the truth
of what really divides us:
money.

You can sit there and think about
all the crimes that
are meant for us.
Now think of their penalty.
Now think about all the crimes
meant for the rich.
What’s their penalty?

As you sit back and think
of a reason why
please keep in mind
we all have to lose
and what they have lost
and tell me how this can be.

When one of us lives and dies
it might make a line in the paper.
When they live and die,
book for generations are written of their “excellence”
and their “prosperity.”

But…we…
No, we are not meant for this world.
We are not meant for this Earth,
and if we try they push us back,
and if…
and if we succeed we become them
or else we fall back.
This world is not meant for the poor
and not meant for the moral.
It’s meant for animals.

This class war–
yes this class war
has been going on for decades or more
and we are losing.
And losing hard
because they divide us.
We see Republican and Democrat,
and we see black or white,
gay or straight,
instead of seeing what combines us:
our struggle.

To get through this struggle
we must unite and find a way
to win this fight
and beat this life
to bring us back
to crack this…
War.

  1. Amen brother. Agree 100% I wrote something like this. We’re being played. Kansas city chuffle. And that is how they win.

    • Indeed. If you ask regular people what is wrong in the United States, most will say the same thing: healthcare, jobs, racial issues. The difference is only how to solve these problems. Instead of trying to compromise and see what we have in common, we instead divide ourselves by race, religion, or other. It is ridiculous and counter-productive. And that is what “they” want. How else will they stay in power? How else will they keep all their money?

      • Yes I agree. Divide and conquer. Better for a government to have a nation at each other’s throats rather than at the government’s throat. Also it creates neatly compartmentalised groups of voters who they can appeal to in the run up to elections by appearing to take their side. But ultimately they don’t care about any of those issues; only about preserving power and giving the rich more, and the poor less. Not representing women or men, or black or white or disabled or whatever, but representing their banking masters and whichever shareholders line their pockets the most. If only the people could see that and unite to take on the real enemy, the world might stand a chance of actually changing. But divided like this, we are so easily controllable. And there remains the problem, of how to make a new system which is not corrupted by the same influences. A tough proposition. I’d like to see someone try at least though!
