“Ode to the Proboscis Monkey” by Gary R. Hess – A Zoo Poem

ODE TO THE PROBOSCIS MONKEY

by Gary R. Hess

Your long appendage
fits squarely on the surface of splendor.
Your coat of armor
delivers worth and protection
humans ourselves can only dream of having.
But why must you suffer so?
Your forest rampaged.
Your food dwindling.
Your family missing.
When will you resurface?
When will your love approach us?
Cousin, we are the same in many ways.
Cousin, forgive us.

Gary R. Hess

Gary was born and raised on a small farm in rural Kansas. Today, he is teaching various nationalities English in Southeast Asia.
