“He Knew” by Gary R. Hess – A Slam Poem

HE KNEW
by Gary R. Hess

Sweat dripped down his face,
as heat overcame his mind.
Dampness made his fingers wrinkle
and as he closed his eyes
thoughts of summer escaped him.
He went back to colder times–
to better times.
He went back to the place
where his mind was free from all the worries,
all the disappointments,
and of all the pain.
He went back to his hometown.
The place where he grew.
The place where his mind flourished.
The place where even though he wasn’t accepted,
he felt safe.
He felt comfort.
He felt his mind grow
and expand and it filled the room
with ideas and with prosperity
of all the times he knew.
He knew of his dying wish
and he knew of his lifelong passion
and he knew of his dream.

He knew of the sacrifices he must make
and he knew of everything it must take
but he knew. Yes, he knew
about all the things which might become
of him as he grew.
When his knowing grew and his appetite anewed,
he knew. He knew the few of avenues
which flew into his mind like animals with wings.

This has happened once before
and at that time he was just twenty-four
and at that time he did also know
of the things that must be said, he knew.

But as his mind expanded and filled the room
his heart began to pound and make that sound
you never want to hear.

Depravity.
Shame. Humiliation.

He opened his eyes
and wiped his brow
and took his hands
and knew:
a dream is something we take for granted
but we also take to the stars
and grant it wishes which will never be
or never was before.
He knew.
